Shipyard days, moody skies & why this city keeps pulling me back
Currently docked in Barcelona while the yacht’s in the shipyard — and honestly, I’m not mad about it.
This is my fourth time here, and every visit hits differently. Barcelona is vibrant without being overwhelming, stylish without trying too hard, and as an LGBTQ+ crewmember, it’s one of those cities where you instantly feel… welcome.
I’m here in winter, we’ve had a fair bit of rain (very on brand for someone from Scotland), but seeing Barcelona under moody skies gives it a raw, cinematic edge that summer doesn’t always show.
Below is my A-SWAV guide — the stuff I genuinely love, recommend, and return to.

Why Everyone Falls for Barcelona
Barcelona has this rare ability to be many things at once:
- A beach city 🌊
- A cultural powerhouse 🏛️
- A party city 🕺
- A creative hub 🎨
- A safe, inclusive space 🌈

In summer, it’s electric — sunshine, beach days, rooftop drinks, and late dinners that turn into 3am conversations. In winter, it slows down just enough to let you breathe, explore, and actually live like a local.
For crew especially, it’s a dream:
- Easy transport
- Great food at every price point
- A strong LGBTQ+ scene
- And that unbeatable sun + sea + city combo
8 Things You Shouldn’t Miss
- Stroll La Rambla (but don’t eat there)
Iconic, chaotic, touristy — but worth walking once. Just save your meals for elsewhere. - Get Lost in El Born
Boutique shopping, hidden bars, tiny streets — this is where Barcelona feels romantic and lived-in. - Sunset at Barceloneta Beach
Even in winter, wrap up and walk along the promenade. In summer? Golden hour perfection. - Visit the Sagrada Família
Yes, it’s busy. Yes, it’s worth it. Gaudí doesn’t miss.

- Montjuïc Views
Cable car or walk — either way, the city views are unreal.
- Drink in Eixample
Stylish, relaxed, and a bit more grown. Great cocktail bars and cafés.
- Explore the Gothic Quarter
Moody, historic, and dramatic — especially beautiful on rainy days.
- Experience the LGBTQ+ Nightlife
Open, fun, and inclusive without feeling like a novelty.

Where to Stay
💸 Budget / Crew-Friendly
- Generator Barcelona – social, stylish, and perfect if you want to meet people
- Yeah Hostel Barcelona – clean, modern, and well-located
- Hotel Praktik Bakery – affordable boutique vibes with character
✨ Boujee (But Worth It)
- W Barcelona – iconic sail-shaped hotel on the beach
- Hotel Arts Barcelona – luxury, views, and calm
- Eurohotel Diagonal Port – classic, elegant, and very Barcelona
Shopping in Barcelona 🛍️
Barcelona is dangerous for shopping — in the best way.

- Passeig de Gràcia – designer heaven
- El Born – independent boutiques & vintage
- Plaça de Catalunya – high-street staples
- Diagonal Mar – shopping mall escape on rainy days
Pro tip: Spanish fashion brands often feel more fashion-forward than UK high street — dangerous knowledge.
Barcelona in Winter: What to Expect ☔️✨
- Mild temperatures
- Fewer crowds
- Occasional rain (adds character, trust me)
- Cheaper accommodation
- Slower, more local energy
Christmas Vibes 🎄
- Fira de Santa Llúcia Christmas Market
- Festive lights around Plaça de Catalunya
- Hot chocolate stops become essential
Winter Barcelona feels intimate — like the city is letting you in on a secret.
Where to Eat (Tested & Trusted)
🍽️ Mid → High End
- El Nacional – something for everyone
- Tickets (if you’re lucky) – iconic tapas experience
- Cervecería Catalana – always busy, always worth it
- Disfrutar – Michelin magic
- Can Solé – classic seafood

💰 Budget But Brilliant
- Bo de B – legendary sandwiches
- La Paradeta – pick your seafood, they cook it fresh
- La Tasqueta de Blai – cheap, cheerful, and delicious pintxos
A-SWAV Secret 🤫
If you want a crew-approved moment:
- Skip the obvious bars
- Grab wine from a local shop
- Sit along the beach promenade at night
- Or wander El Born after midnight
Barcelona shines when you stop trying to “do everything” and just exist in it.
Overall Rating & Final Thoughts ⭐️
Barcelona Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)
I love this city because it gives me:
- Sun when I need it
- Sea when I’m craving calm
- Energy when I’m bored
- Space when I’m tired
Shipyard periods can feel long — but cities like Barcelona remind me why this lifestyle works.
It always gives me something back.
Until next time, Barcelona — gracias 💙
